Abundance is often misunderstood as luck or circumstance. Science shows it is the result of how our brain and heart systems interact with our beliefs, emotions, and daily choices. Neuroscience confirms that leaders can literally rewire their nervous system for greater resilience, creativity, and well-being (Davidson & McEwen, 2012).
When we shift from scarcity-driven patterns to an abundance mindset, we not only improve our own performance but also elevate the energy and results of our teams.
Here are four practices, grounded in research, to help you expand your capacity for abundance and leadership impact…
Step 1: Ask Yourself if You Are Willing to Live in Abundance
Like electricity that only flows when connected to the grid, abundance flows when we intentionally “plug in.” Research on neuroplasticity shows the brain reorganizes itself based on focus and practice (Davidson & McEwen, 2012). The first step is internal: Am I truly willing to live at a higher level of possibility?
Step 2: Say Yes—Wholeheartedly
A half-hearted “maybe” keeps us stuck. Motivational psychology demonstrates that clear commitments activate new neural pathways that change behavior (Gollwitzer, 1999). A wholehearted “Yes” to abundance sets change in motion, priming leaders to access creativity, innovation, and resilience.
Step 3: Identify Your Leadership Set Point
Behavioral science shows that people tend to return to a baseline level of happiness or wealth after major life events—a concept called the hedonic set point (Brickman & Campbell, 1971). That’s why most lottery winners return to their prior financial state within three years. As leaders, the “set point” represents unconscious beliefs about how much success, influence, or fulfillment we can sustain. To expand into abundance, we must raise this set point by upgrading beliefs and practices that define what is possible for us and our teams.
Step 4: Replace Limiting Beliefs—Pour in Clear Water
Instead of battling old beliefs, focus on building new, empowering ones. The broaden-and-build theory in positive psychology demonstrates that positive emotions like gratitude and appreciation expand our cognitive and behavioral capacity (Fredrickson, 2001).
By consistently “pouring in clear water” – gratitude, possibility thinking, coherent practices—we gradually replace scarcity with abundance. Over time, our leadership and life operate at a higher level of flow and resilience.
Abundance is not accidental—it’s a conscious, science-based choice. As leaders, when we expand our inner capacity, we ignite potential not only in ourselves but in everyone we influence.
