After a demanding day—leading meetings, solving challenges, and balancing personal responsibilities—it’s natural to seek physical recovery. Many turn to exercise, yoga, or relaxation.
But leaders often overlook a critical dimension: emotional recovery.
Even subtle signs of stress—irritability, anxiety, or lack of focus—can compound over time, impacting decision-making, relationships, and health. Neuroscience research confirms that chronic stress dysregulates the nervous system and impairs executive function (McEwen, 2007; Thayer et al., 2012).
This is where heart-brain coherence practices come in. The Institute of HeartMath has developed the Soft Heart Tool, a simple yet powerful technique that leaders can integrate into their routines.
The Soft Heart Tool in 4 Steps
- Recognize when you’re experiencing stress or depleting emotions.
- Acknowledge that it’s not just the emotion but the meaning you assign that drains your energy.
- Shift into a “Soft Heart attitude” by intentionally evoking care, appreciation, or love.
- Soak unwanted feelings in this compassionate state, letting them gradually dissolve.
Why it Works
Studies show that heart-focused practices increase heart rate variability (HRV), a key biomarker of resilience and adaptability (McCraty & Childre, 2010). This physiological coherence improves emotional regulation, mental clarity, and relational presence—core leadership capacities.
By practicing the Soft Heart Tool just 2–3 times a week, leaders can reset their system, access greater clarity, and lead with renewed presence.
How often do you invest in emotional recovery as intentionally as physical recovery?

Every month, I reserve a handful of conversations with leaders who want to explore how resilience and emotional self-regulation can translate into clearer thinking, stronger presence, and greater impact. If you’d like to experience these practices first-hand and see what they could mean for your leadership, you can book a complimentary discovery conversation here.
