In leadership, having a vision is not optional—it’s essential. But not every vision deserves your energy. The right vision is the one aligned with your purpose and core values, and it’s this alignment that fuels sustainable impact.
Research in psychology and neuroscience confirms this: when goals and visions are self-concordant—aligned with your intrinsic values—they generate greater motivation, engagement, and resilience (Sheldon & Elliot, 1999; Deci & Ryan, 2000). Leaders who pursue visions that resonate deeply are more capable of navigating challenges and inspiring others.
Here are five questions to assess whether your vision is truly aligned with your leadership purpose…
- Does it spark passion? Neuroscience shows that passion activates dopamine pathways, increasing focus and perseverance. If thinking about your vision gives you energy, it’s a good sign.
- Does it align with your values? A vision that conflicts with your core values creates cognitive dissonance, draining your energy. Alignment fosters authenticity and trust.
- Does it stretch you to grow? Visionary goals should push you outside your comfort zone, activating neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to rewire and expand capacity.
- Is it bigger than you? If you already know every step, your vision may be too small. Growth-oriented visions demand collaboration, innovation, and higher thinking.
- Does it serve others? Positive psychology research shows that prosocial goals—those that create good beyond yourself—enhance meaning and team engagement (Seligman, 2011).
Leaders who ask these questions avoid chasing distractions and instead commit to visions that strengthen both performance and legacy.
Your leadership impact grows when your vision is aligned with who you are and the value you want to create.
